PHILOSOPHY IN ONTARIO HIGH SCHOOLS – A MAJOR SUCCESS STORY 

In Ontario, more than 28,000 grade 11 and 12 students study philosophy in over 440 schools.

The Ontario Philosophy Teacher’s Association is the official voice of secondary school philosophy teachers in Ontario. As such, OPTA is recognized and accredited by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the Ontario College of Teachers, and the Curriculum Forum of the Ontario Teachers’ Federation.

OPTA is a not-for-profit organization whose purposes are:

1. to support and promote the study of philosophy in Ontario schools;
2. to represent members and liaise with the Ministry of Education, the Ontario College of Teachers and the Ontario Teachers’ Federation in all matters that concern philosophy education in Ontario;
3. to liaise with any and all provincial, national and international organizations that support and promote the study of philosophy in schools;
4. to provide regular professional development opportunities for its members;
5. to provide opportunities for the development and sharing of teaching and learning resources;
6. to maintain a Web site.
